Bringing Home Your Mini Aussie – Part 5

Published by Mini Aussie Collective

If you’re stepping in puddles or finding surprise “gifts,” don’t worry — you’re not alone! Potty training is one of the most common concerns for new puppy parents, but with the right plan and consistency, your Mini Aussie will catch on fast.

🧠 First, Understand the Puppy Bladder

Mini Aussies are smart — but their bladders? Still under construction.

General rule: Puppies can “hold it” for about 1 hour per month of age.

That means an 8-week-old pup needs potty breaks every 2 hours (yes, even at night!).

🏡 Step 1: Pick a Potty Spot and Stick With It

Whether it’s a patch of grass or a turf pad indoors:

✅ Always take them to the same spot

✅ Use a cue word like “go potty”

✅ Reward with praise and treats immediately

⏱ Step 2: Follow the “Pee Predictables”

Take your puppy out:

  • First thing in the morning

  • After naps

  • After eating or drinking

  • After play

  • Every 2–3 hours

  • Before bedtime

🧺 Step 3: Use the Crate as a Training Tool

Crates help teach bladder control:

✅ Right-size crate

✅ Take out immediately after

✅ Praise + treat for potty success

🙈 What About Accidents?

They happen.

✅ Clean with enzyme cleaner

✅ Stay calm

❌ Don’t punish or scold

❌ Don’t rub their nose in it

Accidents happen! Stay calm and clean thoroughly.
